ATRIUM

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION SPACE

Location

The Clocktower Atrium display area sits inside the central circulation space of the building between the Clocktower café and Croydon library at one end and the Museum Of Croydon’s gallery spaces, research and activity rooms at the other end. The building is also home to other public services such as Croydon Adult Learning & Training (CALAT) and the David Lean Cinema, which is programmed by a local friends group.

Layout & Dimensions

Atrium Staircase wall

Opposite the atrium display wall is the staircase wall which consists of a total of 8 linear metres of wall with differing heights.

In 2018, ADi Solutions installed a clip rail hanging system to extend hanging space within the Atrium. This system uses clear hanging wires and clops to suspend artworks and also offers heavier metal cables for heavier works of art.

Atrium Display wall

The display wall in the Croydon Clocktower atrium consists of a total 12.5 linear metres of wall to a maximum height of 2.4 m. There is therefore a maximum total of c.30 sqm wall space. [N.B. Allow 2.5 - 3 litres of paint for one coat.]

This total 12.5 linear length is currently arranged in 'bays' from left to right as follows: 2m, 1m, 1m, 1m, 3m, [vertical support section of <0.5m and <0.5m], 3m, 1m & 0.5m.

The display wall is constructed on a timber frame, and is positioned in reconfigurable sections of two 0.5m and twelve 1m width panels.

Atrium Single wall

On the same side of the Atrium as the Display wall and opposite the entrance to the entrance to the Museum’s research room and Riesco Gallery is one single wall.

This wall has a clip rail hanging system (installed by ADi Solutions). This system uses clear hanging wires and clops to suspend artworks and also offers heavier metal cables for heavier works of art.

All measurements are to nearest half metre - ALL EXHIBITORS ARE REQUIRED to measure walls in advance of exhibit and/or any exhibition related expenditure. This allows for natural movement in walls and manufacturing differences. The Museum will not be held accountable for any loss of money relating to measurements of walls / panels.

More Information

This area has welcomed free standing cases, pop-up banners, 3D art, decoration on columns and floors. Chat to us if you have more ideas!

The atrium display wall / panels were provided and built by ADi Solutions. They can undertake re-decoration and art hanging projects and supply additional panels on a hire in basis for use in large scale exhibitions / alternative layouts. This will normally only be undertaken for high profile exhibitions on an 'at cost' basis. You can contact them by email for quotes: sol@groupadi.com.

Lighting & Power

The walls are lit by natural light, supplemented by building lights when required. There is currently no specific exhibition lighting supplied for this display. We recommend you visit the space to see lighting levels, especially in winter months.

Power can be obtained from a nearby power outlet if required, which is located at high level on the rear (CALAT corridor) side of the display walls/panels. This may require trunking / surge breaker protection prior to first use.

Suitability

This space is most suitable for two dimensional works and works that require less to no invigilation, as this is a public area not fully under the control of the Museum of Croydon. Please note: no objects from the Museum collection can be displayed in this area.
