Croydon Through the Lens of Charles Harrison Price

By popular demand, this brilliant exhibition is being reinstalled in the Atrium Gallery after being unfortunately cut short by the pandemic restrictions in early 2020.

The exhibition comprises 50 images by Croydon-based photographer Charles Harrison Price (b. 1870 in America) taken between 1903-1939.  Although professionally Price’s work was studio portraiture, his oeuvre includes outstanding pictures of topographical locations, people, events and local scenes.

Travelling around the borough with a cumbersome box camera on legs in the sidecar of his motorbike, Price supplemented his studio income photographing everyday scenes for postcards.  The exhibition shows he clearly had an eye for composition, and it was this that set him apart from his contemporaries.

The pictures exhibited are from the collection of the late John Gent, a former president of Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society.  They offer an outstanding insight into the social history of Croydon during the first half of the 20th century.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society and the Bourne Society.
