EXHIBITION GALLERY

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION SPACE

Location

The Exhibition gallery can be found in the Croydon Archive’s Research Room next to the Riesco Gallery. It is open in line with the Research Room’s opening times.

As the Exhibition gallery sits within a collections space we do have procedures to protect the collection and researchers. This can include, but is not limited to, quarantining objects and avoiding loud noise/painting from installs during opening hours.

Layout & Dimensions

The Exhibition Gallery consists of a total 19 linear metres of wall to a maximum height of 2.95 m. There is therefore a maximum total of c.57 sqm wall space. In practice this is reduced by a total of 3 aperture windows which were installed to improve the ambiance and provide better sightlines across the whole space. These measure 45 cm wide by 150 cm high, with the bottom of each window positioned 92 cm from floor level. In addition there is an unusable ‘deadspot’ in the right, return wall corner measuring 10cm wide.

This leaves 17.55 linear meters of useable wall space within the exhibition gallery arranged as follows:

  • Left wall on entry: 7.20 m total. 6.30 m useable, arranged in 3 sections of 1.30 m, 3.70 m & 1.30 m (not including aperture windows between each section).

  • Facing wall on entry: 3.40 m useable.

  • Right wall on entry: 7.20 m useable.

  • Right return wall on entry: 1.2 m total. 0.65 m useable, arranged in 1 section (not including aperture window and unusable 0.10 m space in corner).

The gallery’s left wall on entry is constructed from 6 moveable, and removable, ‘lockwall’ panels, 2 of which contain a window aperture. The right, return wall on entry is also constructed of 1 of these panels and contains a window aperture.

The galleries other walls are clad in MDF. This means that, subject to weight limits, fixings can be screwed directly into all walls.

Benches and stools are available to use in area.

All measurements are to nearest half metre - ALL EXHIBITORS ARE REQUIRED to measure walls in advance of exhibit and/or any exhibition related expenditure. This allows for natural movement in walls and manufacturing differences. The Museum will not be held accountable for any loss of money relating to measurements of walls / panels.

More Information

This area has welcomed suspended artworks, murals, wallpapers, large open display objects and more… Chat to us if you have more ideas!

We have used ADi Solutions to undertake re-decoration and art hanging projects in this space in the past. You can contact them by email for quotes: sol@groupadi.com. You are not limited to this company, though we recommend using a company or individuals familiar to working in Museum spaces.

Lighting & Power

Power can be obtained from power outlets within the space (2 double sockets).

There are high level ceiling lighting within the room, in the central space these are directed on specific sections on wall (no adjustability available) and on the exterior wall they are fixed downwards.

Suitability

This is suitable for both 2D and 3D works, including those from the Museum collection. It would be a good space for immersive exhibitions and/or activities.
