ROUTES TO ROOTS:

A SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE EXHIBITION

An exhibition revealing and celebrating the hidden stories and the diverse voices of the South Asian Diaspora in Croydon, Bradford and Sheffield.

8 March - 31 May 2024

Routes to Roots - A South Asian Heritage Project Exhibition opens on 8 March 2024 at the Museum of Croydon. This fascinating multi-media exhibition is a part of Maya Productions' broader Routes to Roots creative programme and promises to be a captivating exploration of the rich and multicultural heritage of Croydon, Sheffield and Bradford.

The Routes to Roots programme brings together heritage, community and theatre partners to work with South Asian communities in Croydon, Sheffield and Bradford. Using a multi-arts approach, the project captures, preserves, and archives authentic stories, challenging assumptions and stereotypes surrounding these communities in the UK. It explores the emotive themes of migration, heritage, family, home and cultural identity which impact us all. This exhibition showcases the inspirational outcomes of these collaborations, including art, poetry, photography, documentary, podcast, and interactive installations.

Drawing inspiration from Maya Production's upcoming musical, Benny and the Greycats, Routes to Roots uses the themes of the musical as a creative catalyst. The musical follows the hopeful journey of an Anglo-Indian family of railway workers moving from playing in a swing band in South India to embarking on a brand new life in 1960s Sheffield.
