Museum and Archives Service Update Feb 2024

Re-opening of Museum galleries

The Museum of Croydon’s permanent gallery on the 1st floor has now re-opened with a new exhibition, ‘Rewind: This is Croydon’s Music’, as part of This Is Croydon, the London Borough of Culture programme. The exhibition will be open from 8th February to 7th September 2024. Click here for more information and opening times.

The ground floor temporary gallery spaces and Riesco gallery will also continue to be open as normal. Please note that those hours differ to the 1st floor gallery space. Click here for opening times.

The Museum’s other galleries on the 1st floor remain closed while we to continue to undertake a programme of collection care and work towards accreditation.

Access to the Museum collections

To enable the team to focus on collection care projects and Accreditation work, over the next six months the Museum has made the decision to pause access to stored objects until after August 2024. In addition, we may also ask for donations to be discussed and/or transferred after this date unless the object(s) and/or project has already been agreed upon.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to provide opportunities for people to view more of our stored collections by delivering temporary exhibitions, behind the scenes tours, digital engagement and outreach activities, in partnership with libraries and community-centred projects. These will be advertised on our website and social media channels.

Our collections pages here show our digitised collections.

Croydon Archives

The Archives Research Room, now under the management of Croydon Libraries, is open by appointment on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Appointments are available from 11-1pm and from 2-4pm and bookings can be made by emailing archives@croydon.gov.uk, providing details of the items you wish to view and preferences for day and time of an appointment. Please note, appointments must be booked with at least five working days’ notice to allow enough time to retrieve material from the stores, and perform condition and closure checks.

We welcome walk-in appointments for resources available on open access in the Research Room at staff discretion if there is availability.

We continue to answer remote enquiries and work closely with our Libraries and Museum colleagues in an integrated way, finding new ways of sharing our collections.

You can find out more about our collections here, and follow our progress through our social media accounts @museumofcroydon and @croydonlibs .
