From March 2024 - May 2025, a group of 14-18 year old 'Young Archivists' are joining us in Croydon Archives - participating in creative exploration of the heritage sector, and reinterpreting diverse histories of Croydon through their perspectives. The 'Young Archivists' will work together on developing engaging ways to present a variety of our archives and local history collections - as well as the new digital archive material generated through Croydon's year as London Borough of Culture, ensuring the community's voice is captured for future generations.

Croydon Archives is looking for a young person aged 16-25 - currently living, working or educated in Croydon - to support this project by collaborating with the Young Archivists and our team.

You will be paid £100 per day, for a total of 20 days work. The role is part of Croydon Music and Arts' 'Young Producers' programme, and on completion of your placement, you will receive a Digital Badge with evidence of your learning through the programme. Digital Badges recognise learning, achievement, and accomplishment outside of formal accredited education, and can be part of your CV.

This is an entry-level role which will support you to gain experience across youth and community engagement, creative facilitation, research, exhibition curation, events planning and heritage access. If you are interested in a future in museums, archives, arts or culture - this is an opportunity for you!

Your role will involve:

  • Working with the Project Engagement Officer to support the delivery of Young Archivists, a creative engagement project for 14-18 year olds.

  • Supporting the Project Engagement Officer and Young Archivists to curate an exhibition in the Museum of Croydon.

  • Shadowing the Borough Archivist, Collections Access Officer and Digital Archivist to learn about their roles.

  • Independently developing your own creative research project on a subject matter of your choice, related to archives or local history.

  • Publicising your project through social media, website content and a printed resource.

  • The option to deliver a workshop for young people related to your project, supported by the Project Engagement Officer.

  • Sharing your ideas for how we can improve the accessibility and inclusion of our services.

We want to explore how archives can better represent the experiences of young people, and foreground their voices. Your ideas will be essential to reinterpreting and highlighting archive material relating to the past, present and future of Croydon - leaving a permanent legacy in Croydon Archives, celebrating Croydon's culture and community.
